WEEKLY REPORT (October 13 through 19, 1997)

A. INTRODUCTION

Construction continued on Segment 2, Angeles National Forest (Milepost (MP) 33 to 57) and Segment 5 (MP 108 to 118).

B. SEGMENT 2A CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS

This segment within the Angeles Forest Service involves very steep slopes and requires significant time and additional equipment for trenching, stringing, and other pipe laying activities. Segment 2A Environmental Monitor (EM), Stan Harding was on-site. PPSI has 12 craft inspectors, six environmental inspectors, and six Native American monitors inspecting the work of approximately 160 contractor employees. Construction progress from October 13 through 18, 1997 included the following:

Segment 2A Comments:

No non-compliance events occurred. Mini-crew continue to work on south slope of Liebre Gulch. The Forest Service is requiring that construction within the forest be completed by November 1, 1997. Crew at Gorman Creek (MP 33.40 to 33.50) laid pipe and began slurry backfill.

Segment 2A Schedule for Next Week:

Lowering-in to finish. Revegetation to resume.

C. SEGMENT 3 CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS

No construction activity occurred on Segment 3 this week.

Segment 3 Schedule for Next Week:

Construction activity not scheduled to resume until October 27.

D. SEGMENT 5 CONSTRUCTION PROGRESS

This segment involves construction in railroad and road right-of-ways through industrial areas from Compton to the Long Beach Harbor. Segment 5 EM, Pete Messick, has been on-site during construction. PPSI has four craft inspectors, one environmental inspector, one Native American monitor, and one contamination inspector inspecting the work of approximately 20 contractor employees during construction of Segment 5C. Construction is complete on Segments 5A and 5B except where skips between segments remain. Skips will be tied-in when the county contractors are no longer working in the areas. Construction progress from October 13 through 17, 1997 included the following:

Segment 5 Comments: No non-compliance events occurred.

Construction will continue on Segment 5C at Alameda Street between the 405 freeway ramp and the 223rd overpass. No night work is anticipated for the coming week.

E. VARIANCES

No variances were approved October 14 through 18, 1997.

F. EXTRA WORK SPACE

No extra work spaces were approved October 14 through 18, 1997.

G. GENERAL PLANS FOR NEXT WEEK

Segments 2A and 5C to continue. Segment 4 projected to begin on October 20. Segment 3 projected to resume on October 27. Segment 1 is projected to begin in late October; El Segundo portion of Segment 4 (Watts Junction to Chevron El Segundo Refinery) projected to begin in October.
