CPUC Environmental Monitoring Activities

SFPP Carson to Norwalk Project

The following is a brief summary of the environmental monitoring activities that were completed between 1:00 on 5/05/99 and 1:00 on 5/06/99. This summary is based on reports directly received from the field and has not been edited. If you have any questions please contact (818) 597-3407. This report is intended to serve as a communication document and as an instrument for quality control.


Construction Highlights

The shift started with the weekly meeting between the applicant and the contractor to discuss the schedule and issues of concern.

Spread 1

City of Long Beach

Spread 1 work in the City of Long Beach has been completed.

City of Paramount

No Spread 1 work occurred in the City of Paramount during the shift.

City of Bellflower

The excavator completed excavation of the bore receiving pit and set the trench boxes. The end of the 30-inch casing is exposed in the bottom of the pit.

City of Cerritos

The boring crew at the San Gabriel River pulled the augers and removed the machine from the pit. A small crew worked on cleaning out the casing pipe and the welder attached hangers for the conduit. The applicant was informed of concern over small oil spills from the boring crew’s crane.

City of Artesia

No work occurred in the City of Artesia during the shift.

City of Norwalk

The backfilling crew completed pouring one-sack slurry to grade on Norwalk Blvd. The paving moved back to a skip to the south on Norwalk Blvd.

Spread 2

Los Angeles County

The crew at the Compton Creek Bridge worked on the fittings on the south side of the bridge. The crew had initial difficulties with the bends leading to the bridge. The pipelaying and welding on the south side of the bridge was completed by the end of the shift. The backfilling crew worked on the support for the valve on the south side of Compton Creek.

City of Long Beach

The crew at the Los Angeles River laid and welded the section of pipe between the 710 Freeway bore and the Los Angeles River bore. A small crew poured slurry at DeForest Park.

City of Paramount

No work occurred in the City of Paramount during the shift.

Watson Station

City of Carson

The crew at the Watson Station continued to work on the electrical connections and the vapor recovery tanks. The crews also welded the connections on the north side of the station.

Norwalk Station

City of Norwalk

The welding crew completed welding the subterranean pipe in the Norwalk Station. The small crew potholed and backfilled inside the station. The mainline pipelaying and welding has been completed on Spread 1.
