CPUC Environmental Monitoring Activities

SFPP Carson to Norwalk Project

The following is a brief summary of the environmental monitoring activities that were completed between 1:00 on 5/07/99 and 1:00 on 5/08/99. This summary is based on reports directly received from the field and has not been edited. If you have any questions please contact (818) 597-3407. This report is intended to serve as a communication document and as an instrument for quality control.


Construction Highlights

Spread 1

City of Long Beach

Spread 1 work in the City of Long Beach has been completed.

City of Paramount

No Spread 1 work occurred in the City of Paramount during the shift.

City of Bellflower

The pipelaying and welding crews worked on the west side of the San Gabriel River to set and weld the bends exiting the bore receiving pit. The crew laid the section of pipe from the bore pit to the tie-in with the completed pipeline. Palo Verde Avenue was left dirty at the end of the shift. A train arrived towards the end of the shift while a mobile crane was on the railroad tracks. The train slowed and the crane was removed from the tracks without incident.

City of Cerritos

The crew at the San Gabriel River poured slurry around the carrier pipe exiting the casing on the east side of the river. A 180-ton crane arrived around noon to remove the trench shoring boxes from the bore pit. The crew had difficulties with the lower boxes and several cuts were made in the crossbars to assist in pulling the boxes. The crew worked late into the evening pulling the boxes and shoring. The access road through the public storage facility was left dirty at the end of the shift. A small crew poured the concrete sidewalks on Artesia Blvd. at the MTA right-of-way.

City of Artesia

No work occurred in the City of Artesia during the shift.

City of Norwalk

The paving crew completed laying asphalt to the sidewalk at the Norwalk Station. Only final paving remains in the City of Norwalk.

Spread 2

Los Angeles County

The crew at the Compton Creek Bridge completed the tie-in on the north side of the bridge. The primer was painted on over the welds and holidays in the coating on the section over the creek. A tarp was placed in the bottom of the basket to protect the creek from dripping primer. The backfilling crew poured the concrete road surface on Santa Fe Avenue south of Compton Creek. The east section will be poured over two shifts to insure access for the fire station.

City of Long Beach

The crew at the Los Angeles River continued working on backfilling over the section of pipe between the 710 Freeway bore and the Los Angeles River bore and the bore pit. The pipelaying and welding crews completed setting and welding the final section in DeForest Park. The pipe was tied-into the valve on the east side of the bore. The paving crew completed the final section of asphalt on DeForest Avenue.

City of Paramount

No work occurred in the City of Paramount during the shift.

Watson Station

City of Carson

The crew at the Watson Station continued to work on the electrical connections. The mainline pipelaying crew moved into the station to prepare for the tie-in with the beginning of Spread 2. The small crew set a valve and a short section of pipe.

Norwalk Station

City of Norwalk

A small crew worked on backfilling inside the station.
