PUC JOINS WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT ON STRIKE TEAM
TO ENFORCE SAFETY COMPLIANCE OF PASSENGER CARRIERS
AT MAJOR AIRPORTS AND OTHER AREAS OF INTERESTS
SAN FRANCISCO, October 11, 2007 - During the third quarter of 2007, the California Public Utilities Commission (PUC) participated in two multi-agency (PUC, California Highway Patrol (CHP), Airport Police, Local Police Department, and Airport Landside Operations) strike force operations on passenger carriers (limousine, shuttles, tour bus) to ensure that these companies are properly licensed with PUC. At the same time, the CHP inspected vehicles for Vehicle Code violations (mechanical violations, balding tires, improper California Driver License). The operations were conducted at the following locations:
1. Del Mar Race Track - July 18, 2007- Opening day at the races. 50 vehicles were interviewed. PUC issued misdemeanor warnings to 5 carriers for operations without authority, and wrote 44 observation reports. Of the 50 vehicles, 6 were "privately owned". CHP placed 2 buses out of service for mechanical violations and issued 4 citations for minor infractions.
2. Los Angeles World Airport (LAX) - July 19, 2007- PUC interviewed 89 vehicles during the operation. PUC issued 6 misdemeanor warnings for operations during permit suspension, 22 Notices to Correct for improper waybills. 7 carriers raised possible violations of workers' compensation laws, of which staff will pursue further investigations. CHP placed 4 buses out of service for mechanical violations and cited 1 driver for having an out of class driver's license.
