Next Steps in 909 Area Code Change Process
The Commission will hold public meetings in July 2003 to discuss the proposals for area code changes in the 909 area, which were submitted to the CPUC in June 2002. A Commission administrative law judge will then consider the comments of the public and interested parties, and will draft a decision proposing an area code change plan for the Commission to consider. The draft decision could recommend whether to implement a new area code in the 909 area, when to implement a new area code, what area code change plan should be implemented, and other steps the CPUC should take instead of or in addition to an area code change.
After the administrative law judge issues a draft decision, interested parties have 30 days to file written comments on the draft decision, as provided in Article 19 of the Commission's "Rules of Practice and Procedure". The draft decision would appear on the Commission's agenda for the next regular meeting at least 30 days after the mailing of the draft decision. The Commission could act then, or it could postpone action until later. When the Commission acts, it may adopt all or part of the draft decision as written, amend or modify it, or set it aside and prepare its own decision. Only when the Commission acts does a decision become binding on the parties.
