CPUC's Rail Safety program plays a vital role in ensuring safe and reliable rail transportation service in California.
We are vigilant in protecting safety for the traveling public on roadways that cross railroad tracks, traveling as patrons on rail systems, employees of rail agencies who operate and maintain these systems, and everyone who benefits from safe and reliable shipment of goods by rail.
Our rail safety program is referred to as the national gold standard. Federal and regulatory agencies from other states frequently adopt rules and innovations developed by California.
Our rail safety work includes:
- Monitoring thousands of locations in California where roadways and pathways cross over tracks.
- Performing railroad safety inspections, in partnership with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
- Investigating railroad accidents and public safety requests.
- Monitoring light rail and cable car systems to ensure they meet public safety requirements.
For additional information on railroad safety, please see our Railroad Safety web page.
For additional information about rail crossings, where a roadway or pathway crosses the track, please see our Rail Crossings web page.
For additional information on the CPUC’s role monitoring the safety of light rail and cable car systems, such as BART, San Francisco MUNI, and the LA County MTA, please see our Rail Transit web page.
