The CPUC regulates railroads and light rail, to ensure the safety of rail workers and the general public. Our rail safety work includes:
- Monitoring over 11,000 intersections in California where highways cross over railroad tracks.
- Performing railroad safety inspections, in partnership with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
- Investigating railroad accidents and public safety requests.
- Monitoring light rail and cable car systems to ensure they meet public safety requirements.
For additional information on railroad safety, please see our Railroad Safety web page.
