The CPUC investigates alleged violations of the Public Utilities Code, CPUC regulations, and other California statutes involving stationary utilities, including telephone (including wireless), electric, gas, and water companies. These investigations generally involve consumer fraud and marketing abuses, and issues of public safety.
The CPUC vigorously enforces state and federal regulations and since 1999 has levied approximately $650 million in fines and restitution across the utilities it regulates. See our spreadsheet of enforcement actions.
January 16, 2014: The Commission issued a decision ordering TracFone Wireless, Inc. to pay $24,397,441.17. this amount equals the full amount of user fees and public purpose program surcharges, including interest accrued, because TracFone did not remit user fees or PPP surcharges to the Commission from 2004 through 2012.
