Report on the Area Code Local & Public Meetings

What is This?

The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) recognizes that there will soon be a shortage of available telephone numbers in the 818 area code. Therefore the CPUC’s Communications Division requested that the North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA), hold an area code change planning meeting for the 818 area code. This meeting was subsequently held on June 14, 2007. At this meeting the Telecommunication industry offered two relief alternatives.

The Two Relief Alternatives

  • Alternative #1 Area Code Split - See Map
  • Alternative #2 Area Code Overlay – See Map

Public Meetings

The CPUC wants your input. The CPUC has held a number of public meetings to allow those affected by an area code change to voice their concerns, opinions, and to be informed about the area code change.

Decision

On April 24, 2008, the CPUC approved an all-services overlay that will add a new 747 area code to the same geographic region as the existing 818 area code in order to provide additional telephone numbers to meet consumer demand.
