818 Area Code

The 818 area code was created in 1984 when it was geographically split from the 213 area code.  The 818 covers the greater San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles County in Southern California.

To ensure an uninterrupted supply of numbers, the CPUC has approved D08-04-059 which introduces 747 as a new area code to be overlaid over the boundaries of the existing 818 area code. Read our press release.

Because the area code overlay is complete, customers in the 818 area code will be required to dial 1 plus ten digits to complete all calls.  The transition from 818 to 818/747 includes a 818 Public Education Plan to ensure that the public is aware of the requirement to dial 10 + 1 numbers to complete a call by April 18, 2009 when the overly will be complete. Read our press release for more information.

The CPUC and the North American Numbering Plan Administrator began the process of introducing new a new area code in April 2007.  In October 2007, four meetings were held in the San Fernando Valley area for members of the public and local officials to express their concerns about telephone numbers in the area.  More information about the 818 public meetings and a complete report  on these meetings is available.

On December 19, 2007, the Numbering Administrator filed an A.07-12-018 with the CPUC recommending an all services overlay for the 818 area code.

Questions about the status of the 818 area code should be directed to the Public Advisor’s Office toll free at (866) 849-8391 or (213) 576-7055.  The Area Code Hotline (866) 340-6147 is also available to answer questions.
