Safety Leadership Conference

On June 26, 2012, the CPUC hosted a Safety Leadership Conference focused on how Boards and Executive Leadership impact organizational success in the area of safety culture and safety practices and what Boards and Executive Leadership can do to address those organizational failures.

The CPUC’s five Commissioners and senior staff were joined at the conference by Board Members and senior staff from PG&E Corporation, PG&E, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, and the Sacramento Regional Transit District, as well as the President of BART’s Board of Directors and its Acting Chief Safety Officer. Also in attendance was the General Manager of BNSF Railway, Caltrain’s Safety Manager, and senior staff from the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority.

These attendees and others heard from Robert Sumwalt, Member of the National Transportation Safety Board, about understanding the critical role of leadership in preventing organizational accidents.  Mortimer Downey III, Vice Chairman of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Board, discussed his Board’s role in Metro’s efforts to recover from the tragic Fort Totten train accident in 2009 by refocusing its mission on safety. Karlene Roberts, Professor Emeritus, UC Berkeley, Haas School of Business and Director of UCB’s Center for Catastrophic Risk Management, concluded the conference with a discussion of high reliability organizations’ processes and outcomes.
