Pedestrian-Rail Crossings in California

The Rail Crossings Engineering Section prepared a document intended to provide a compendium of available pedestrian crossing treatments in use in California to provide public safety at railroad and rail transit crossings.  The document is not intended to specify the specific treatment for any specific location, but is provided to assist railroad company personnel, transit officials and local transportation and public works engineers in selecting the most appropriate treatments for crossings under their control.  Click on the link below to download the document.

Before publishing the final guidance document, we sought the review and input of those groups and individuals for which the document was developed.  Numerous comments were received and incorporated in our document.

We would appreciate any comments about the document, including identification of any errata. Comments should be provided either via electronic mail to rces@cpuc.ca.gov (please put "CPUC Pedestrian Rail Crossings" in the subject line), or in writing to:

We wish to extend special thanks and gratitude to the following RCES engineers who were instrumental in developing this document, Kevin Boles, Jose Pereyra, Kevin Schumacher, and Varoujan Jinbachian.  Without their persistence in the project, this valuable reference document would not have been produced.
