Step 1: Contact Your Utility (see your bill for utility contact information)
The CPUC’s Consumer Affairs Branch (CAB) assists consumers with resolution of disputes against utilities, but does not have access to individual customer accounts. Therefore, you should contact your utility if you have questions regarding your bill, such as:
- What services you are being billed for
- What the rates are for services you are provided
- Bill explanations
- General questions on account status
- Account payments, extensions, payment arrangements
- Billing period; Start and end of billing cycle
- Starting service/Cancelling service
- Payment locations
If you know you are being billed for something you did not order or feel you are being overcharged, you should first attempt to resolve this with your utility. If the utility has made a billing error or other kind of error they are often willing to resolve the issue without the consumer needing to contact CAB or submit a complaint.
