Step 2: Call CAB at 1-800-649-7570 (Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
If you have contacted your utility and have not been able to resolve your dispute, call the CPUC’s Consumer Affairs Branch (CAB). To speed the process, please have the following information handy:
- The bill with the disputed charges
- Account number
- Pen and paper to write down information
When you contact CAB your question or dispute will be received by a trained Consumer Affairs Representative. That Consumer Affairs Representative will ask you a number of questions including:
- Name on the account/account holder’s name
- Your name, if different from the account holder’s name
- Account number
- Your telephone number
- Your address and/or zip code
- Description of the issue or dispute. It helps if you have an understanding of the chronological order of events, such as when the charges were incurred or on which billing cycle the charges appeared.
Using this information the Consumer Affairs Representative will in most cases connect you with a special office at your utility that helps consumers who contact the CPUC with disputes. They will both assist you in resolving your dispute.
