What is Direct Access?

Direct Access, where customers can purchase electricity from an electric service provider (ESP) instead of regulated electric utilities, was suspended on September 20, 2001, by the CPUC (Decision (D.) 01-09-060). This means that Direct Access is not available to new customers. Current Direct Access customers may remain with their current ESPs.

However, the Commission will still maintain a list of registered and non-registered ESPs on its website.
