760 Area Code Change Information

[en Español]

Recognizing that there may soon be a shortage of available telephone numbers in the 760 area code, the California Public Utilities Commission's (PUC) Telecommunications Division requested that the North American Numbering Plan Administration (NANPA), hold an area code change planning meeting for the 760 area code. The meeting was subsequently held on October 10, 2006 to achieve four main objectives.

Public Meetings

One of these objectives established public meetings to allow those affected by an area code change to voice their concerns and opinions and to be informed of the area code change. At these meetings, PUC staff and NANPA will explain the area code change options that the telecommunications industry selected for the 760 area code (Split Alternative #1, Split Alternative #4, and Overlay). They will also ask for the public's preference as to which area code option should be implemented. Lastly, they will discuss the status of numbering resources in the 760 area code. For locations, dates, and times of these local jurisdiction and public meetings, see 760 Area Code Change Public Meetings.

The CPUC plans to issue a decision toward the end of 2007 determining what type of area code change, split or overlay, is appropriate for the 760 area code. If a split is authorized, then the Commission will determine which side of the split line will keep the 760 area code and which side will receive the new 442 area code.

If you need help understanding this area code change and other terms, please see the Additional Information available. Hopefully, these materials will help in making a more informed decision. You can also contact your service provider for information. For questions unanswered by your service provider and the reference materials, please contact the Public Advisor's Office at (866) 340-6147.

What's Your Preference?

If you cannot attend our public meetings, you will be able to submit your preferences on the area code change option you like and share any comments about the proposed implementation plan.  The CPUC will consider your preferences and comments in helping to determine the area code change option to implement for the 760 area code.
