805/820 Area Code

On May 28, 2017, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved an overlay in Decision 17-05-019 to accommodate the need for additional telephone numbers in the 805 area code region. On June 30, 2018, the overlay became effective and the new 820 area code was overlaid onto the 805 area code.

The overlay allows all existing 805 area code customers to keep their telephone numbers and 805 area code. However, calls made from 805 or 820 area code need to be dialed as 1 + area code + 7-digit telephone number. Calls placed from 805 or 820 numbers without the “1” and the area code will not be completed and will result in a recording instructing the caller to hang up and dial again. Cellphone callers who have service with certain cell service providers may be able to complete calls without dialing “1” before the area code.

Dialing 1 + area code + 7-digit telephone number does not change what a call costs and does not mean that a call is a toll or long distance call. Therefore, calling areas and rates do not change. What is a local call before the overlay remains a local call after the overlay and dialing “1” and the area code does not mean there is a charge for the call. Calls to 911, as well as 211, 311, 411, 511, 611, 711 and 811 are not affected, and continue to be dialed with 3 digits.

The 805 area code was introduced when it was split off of the 213 area code in June 1957. The 805 area code was split in 1999 to create the 661 area code.

Today the area served by the 805 area code and its overlay area code 820 includes small portions of Monterey and Kern Counties and most of San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties. The 805 and 820 area codes serve the cities of Arroyo Grande, Atascadero, Grover Beach, Morro Bay, Pismo Beach and San Luis Obispo in San Luis Obispo County; Buellton, Carpinteria, Goleta, Guadalupe, Lompoc, Santa Barbara, Santa Maria and Solvang in Santa Barbara County; Camarillo, Fillmore, Moorpark, Ojai, Oxnard, Port Hueneme, Santa Paula, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and Ventura in Ventura County.

The 805/820 area code overlay complex is bordered on the north by the 831 area code; to the east by the 559 area code and the 661 area code, to southeast by the 747/818 area code overlay complex, and to the south by the 310/424 area code overlay complex.
