    Town Hall Meeting

     

    On January 20, 2012 Commissioner Simon and the Senate Select Committee on Procurement held a Town Hall Meeting to discuss “Investment Fund Allocations to Emerging Investment Managers” – and to get recent progress to mitigate barriers to emerging and diverse firms in California’s public utility companies and public pension funds.

    On November 13, 2011 Commissioner Simon sponsored a panel to discuss barriers to procurement opportunities for diverse and emerging law firms within the investor-owned utilities; and how to recognize diverse opportunities for women/minorities attorneys (partners) within majority law firms. The utility general counsel will discuss transparency and opportunities for diverse and emerging law firms.

    On July 22, 2011 Commissioner Simon and the Senate Select Committee on Procurement held a joint informational hearing to “Examine Barriers to Procurement Opportunities for Diverse and Emerging Investment Management within California’s Public Utility Companies and Public Pension Funds”

    On July 17, 2011 Commissioner Simon sponsored a panel discussion on access to capital (i.e., equity, credit lines, surety, completion bonds, risk management tools, letters of credit) and other financial opportunities and barriers to capital to foster procurement for diverse and emerging businesses.

    In November 2010 in Atlanta, Commissioner Simon moderated a panel on creating more access and opportunities to emerging firms in the clean energy and technology sector.

    On October 12, 2010 Commissioner Simon and the Senate Select Committee on Procurement held a joint informational hearing to “Examine Barriers to Procurement Opportunities for Emerging and Diverse Firms in Investment Management and Other Financial Services.”

    In July 2010 in Sacramento during NARUC summer meetings, Commissioner Simon moderated a panel on directed brokerage and research and hosted a NARUC reception. He also organized a New Connections reception honoring FCC Commissioner Migon Clyburn and other notables.

    In February 2010 in Washington, D.C., Commissioner Simon moderated a panel on New Connections through GO156 to national prominence and shared successes. The New Connections reception honored NARUC President David Coen and other notables.

    On September 17, 2009, New Connections held its eighth symposium – dedicated to Community Banking, Money Market Funds, Money Market Fund Portals, and Institutional Investments. Capital Network, Inc., East West Bank, and Williams Capital Management – emerging diverse financial firms – hosted the event and focused on the panel questions – “how can diverse financial institutions and institutional investors help the utilities enhance their objectives in shareholder values, liquidity, and capital preservations in both community and institutional investments?”

    On June 24, 2009, New Connections held its seventh symposium – dedicated to Private Equity Investments. DBL Investors, Gardner Rich & Company, and Utendal – emerging diverse financial firms – hosted the event and focused on the panel question – “how can private equity investments help utilities further both fiduciary needs to shareholders/pension plan participants as well as strategic, community and regulatory goals?

    On February 8, 2009, New Connections held its sixth symposium – dedicated to Fleet Services. Elite Auto Network, a minority owned business enterprise, specializing in fleet services and alternative fuel solutions, hosted the event and spoke on the topic of “Greening Your Fleet.”

    Certified Public Accountants & Management Consultants

    On November 12, 2008, New Connections held its fifth symposium – dedicated to Certified Public Accountants & Management Consultants. Macias Gini & O’Connell, a minority owned business enterprise, specializing in certified public accounting and management consultants, hosted the event and spoke on the topic of “Emerging Minority CPA Firms”. Deloitte and Price Waterhouse Cooper lead the discussion on “International CPA Firms.”

    On September 8, 2008, New Connections held its fourth symposium – dedicated to Disabled Veterans Business Enterprises / Investment Banking and Engineering. SL Hare Capital, a disabled veteran business enterprise, specializing in investment-banking, hosted the event and spoke on the topic of “Marketing and Business Development Strategies.” AECOM lead a discussion on “Industry Perspective” and KMEA lead a discussion on “Making a Cost Center Into a Profit Center.”

    On July 8, 2008, New Connections held its third symposium – dedicated to Insurance Services. Merriwether & Williams, a woman owned business enterprise, specializing in insurance services, hosted the event and spoke on the topic of “Creating Access to Insurance Opportunities Within the Utilities Industry.” AIG – Chairman and GEO lead the discussion on “AIG’s Vendor Diversity Program.”

    On November 8, 2007, New Connections held its first symposium – dedicated to Securities Underwriting. Blaylock & Co., a minority owned business enterprise, specializing in securities underwriting, hosted the event and spoke on the topic of “How Minority Investment Banks Are Ready and Able to Add Value.” Goldman Sachs & Company – Head of US Investment Grade Syndicate, spoke on the subject of “Diversity in Action: Working Together Effectively.”
