Edwin Schmitt
David joined the Commission’s Legal Division in 2021 and has worked on issues related to wildfire risk, transportation, telecommunications and ratepayer protections. Before working at the Commission, David worked as a lawyer in private practice and as an Assistant Federal Public Defender in San Francisco and Los Angeles. His experience includes argument before the United States Supreme Court, the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit (en banc), and the California Courts of Appeal. David served as the 2018-2019 Chair of the Judicial Nominee Evaluation Committee of the State Bar of California, and received the 2019 “Loren Miller Attorney of the Year Award” from the California Association of Black Attorneys in recognition of his commitment to public service.
David received his B.A. in Anthropology from Carleton College in Northfield, MN and his J.D. from Washington University School of Law in St. Louis.
