TECH Clean California End Use Metering Study

Welcome to Technology and Equipment for Clean Heating (TECH) Clean California End Use Metering (EUM) Study, and thank you for your participation! On this page, you can learn more about the study and the Emporia Vue 2 device in your electrical panel that is being used to monitor the energy use of your new heat pumps and other appliances.

The TECH program that this home participated in started giving incentives for heat pumps in 2021. More information about the program and its achievements to date can be found at www.techcleanca.com.

What are we metering and why?

The Emporia Vue 2 device installed in your electrical panel tracks the continuous energy use of the heat pumps you received through the TECH Clean California program. It also tracks energy use or generation for other significant equipment like refrigerators, solar panels and electric vehicle charging stations, if present. This data helps to examine the use and performance of the heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment and water heaters as well as their contribution to the whole-house load.

Why is my data being shared with the public?

The CPUC and/or its agents publish the EUM data collected through this study on the CPUC website. The EUM data is used to develop a) public reports and datasets for the TECH Clean California program and other building decarbonization programs and, b) energy and environmental policies, and market awareness for building electrification and decarbonization. It can also be used by people and organizations other than the CPUC looking to understand the performance of home equipment In other words, the data are being made public to help future research for clean energy transition. Making it public also gives an extra layer of accountability to the manufacturers, installers, implementers, and state staff that worked to bring the equipment to your home. Earlier-than-expected failures, or under performance can be examined well beyond the duration of the program, if the data stream continues.

When will my data be made available to the public?

The data procured through this study will not be made available until 2025. This website will be updated at that time and will include a link to the publicly available data donated through this effort. Your data will never be made public in real time – there will always be a lag to allow for data cleaning and processing prior to the data being posted publicly.

How do I view the Emporia metered data?

During the initial one-year metering period, study participants cannot access the Emporia metered data. After the first year of metering, the results will be posted publicly on this CPUC website. At the same time, the evaluation team will work with study participants to create an Emporia account so that they can view and monitor their own energy usage.

For electricians: Removing and/or reconnecting the Emporia and current transformers (CTs)

You may temporarily disconnect the Emporia device to perform work on the electric panel, but take a photograph before removal and please leave as many wires in place as possible and be sure to reinstall any removed components to their original locations.

Emporia device installation guides are available here: https://www.emporiaenergy.com/installation-guides. There are separate guides for the Vue 2 and the flexible current sensors used on some installations.

Who do I contact with questions?

During the initial one-year study period, please contact bt-metering@opiniondynamics.com if you have any questions or concerns regarding the Emporia device. If you have questions regarding the legitimacy of the study, please visit the CPUC valid survey page, which identifies a CPUC contact for this study.
