Map of Battery Energy Storage Systems Under CPUC Jurisdiction
Purpose and Methodology
The BESS Facilities Map provides an inventory of utility-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) facilities in California with a capacity of 1 MW or greater, based on information available as of June 2026.
The dashboard is organized at the facility level, meaning that multiple CAISO Resource IDs or related project records are consolidated when they appear to represent the same physical BESS facility. This approach is intended to support facility-level safety, compliance, audit, and monitoring work under General Order 167-C, rather than market-resource accounting. As a result, facility counts and power capacity totals may differ from other public energy storage system datasets that use different reporting scopes, aggregation methods, market-resource identifiers, or data sources.
Data Sources
Self-reported data from CPUC-issued 2026 Survey of BESS Facilities, supplemented by facility-level reconciliation and review using CAISO, CEC, utility-provided, and internal CPUC information.
Dashboard Features
The dashboard has two main areas, a map and a side column with four toggleable tabs providing supplemental information on BESS facilities. The four tabs are Facility Search, Summary, Charts, and Legend.
Map
The map shows icons for all utility-scale BESS facilities in the state. Icons are placed at the center of the facility’s ZIP code to provide general geographic context. When there are multiple facilities in a ZIP code, icon locations are randomized within the ZIP code. The map should not be used to identify exact facility locations or site boundaries.
Active facilities have green icons and pending facilities have yellow icons. “Active” refers to facilities identified as operating or in active service. “Pending” refers to facilities identified as not yet active. Facilities with power capacity of 50 MW or greater have larger icons.
Users can select the icon of any facility to open a pop-up window with information on the facility’s characteristics. The information includes:
-
Active status
-
Power capacity in MW
-
City, County, and ZIP code
-
Battery type
-
Whether the facility is indoors or outdoors
-
The utility territory where the facility is located
Users can zoom in and out of the map using the scroll wheel on their mouse or the zoom controls on the upper-left side of the map. The home button on the upper-left side of the map will return the map to its default view.
Facility Search
In the Facility Search tab, users can search for a facility by name or by address. The tab also provides state-level summary statistics. They describe the total number of facilities and their reported power capacity broken down by active status and facility size.
Summary
The Summary tab allows users to filter the mapped facilities by county, size, and active status. These filters can be applied in any combination and will be reflected on the map and in the list of facilities below the filters. Each filter has a trashcan icon in the bottom right that will clear all selected categories and return the filter to its default. The filters can also be toggled on and off individually.
Users can select a facility from the list to zoom to its location and a pop-up window with additional information. Below the list of facilities are summary statistics for the facilities meeting the filter criteria. For example, a user filtering for active facilities with power capacity of 50 MW or greater in Santa Clara and Alameda counties would see only the facilities meeting those criteria, along with summary statistics describing the total number of facilities and their reported power capacity meeting those criteria.
Charts
The Charts tab has pie charts breaking down the number of facilities by active status, size, and indoor/outdoor status. The charts are affected by any active filters. Users can toggle between the Summary and Charts tabs to customize the charts.
