626 Area Code

The CPUC began the process to introduce a new area code to the 626 area code, as the supply of available prefixes in the 626 area code region is expected to be depleted by Fourth Quarter, 2027. Pending approval by the CPUC, the new area code will be introduced on top of the 626 area code region.

On February 20, 2025 the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA) filed Application (A.)25-02-004 on behalf of the telecommunications industry, requesting that the CPUC approve an overlay area code in the 626 area code region to provide additional numbering resources in the region.

Background

The 626 area code was split off from 818 in 1997, which was itself split off the 213 area code in 1984. The 626 area code region is located entirely within Los Angeles County and generally covers the San Gabriel Valley.
